Amenities Count: Comfort and Convenience in Today’s Senior Living Communities

Francis LeGasse Jr • December 13, 2022

You hear a lot about senior living amenities these days, everything from spas to swimming pools to salons. There’s definitely a trend among many larger communities to create an environment on par with a resort. But for some seniors, the greatest amenities are those that create a genuine feeling of being at home: comfortable, casual, and convenient.

In fact, for families of older adults who are transitioning to memory care, the most cherished senior living amenities and services are purposeful and familiar—such as those often found in residential senior living.

Senior living amenities that feel like home

In assisted living memory care located in a suburban home (residential senior living), a small group of residents have easy access to familiar areas of a house, making each a true “amenity” they can enjoy year-round. For example, at Assured Senior Living, residents can easily access the following:

• A front porch. Many older adults grew up in homes that had welcoming front porches…places where they could greet their neighbors, people-watch, and enjoy some idle time outdoors. It’s still a great place to spend time with friends, or share stories with grandchildren. In addition, a front porch in residential senior living accentuates the very nature of neighborhood living—ongoing contact and involvement with others.

Simply put, a front porch can be a source of happiness—and also better health—which is especially beneficial for those with Alzheimer's or another form of dementia.

• A cozy den. Perfect for having a conversation with a neighbor, listening to music on a rainy afternoon, watching the big game and munching on popcorn…in residential senior living, residents have enjoy a comfortable den whenever they choose. Only this den is much like the one they most likely had at home, with furnishings that are selected for comfort and ease of use. Think rocking chair, easy chair, soft throw pillows.

Drop by one of our Assured Senior Living communities and you’ll see—just like in any home, the den is a welcome spot day or evening.

• A kitchen. Who doesn’t love to gather in a friendly kitchen? Most people have fond memories of kitchens, from aromas of baked goods at the holidays, to family gatherings for snacks on game day, to delicious meals prepared with love. An inviting, accessible kitchen is one of the most popular senior living amenities, and in residential senior living, it’s where residents can pitch in and help create the dining experience.

Dining home-style is especially helpful for memory care residents, with tantalizing aromas inviting them to join in. In addition, the layout of the kitchen and dining area, table setting, and even the colors selected all are designed to help promote pleasant, successful dining.

• Outside patio. Senior living amenities would not be complete without safe, easily accessible outdoor areas. Getting fresh air and Vitamin D has been shown to reduce stress levels and agitation for someone living with dementia. In fact, as little as 10 to 15 minutes outdoors can be highly beneficial. All the senses can be engaged:  a gentle breeze on the face, sounds of birds singing, aroma of flowers, and the warmth of a sunny day.

At Assured Senior Living, we love how our residents can experience both a beautiful day outdoors in Colorado—as well as the warmth of their inviting senior home!

Services that make life easier

In addition, there are many important services and conveniences that are senior living amenities as well, enhancing the quality of life for residents:

  • Expertly-trained staff onsite and awake 24/7
  • Exclusive memory care programs and services
  • Housekeeping and laundry services
